Knockdown and Rebuild Money-Saving Tips: Recycle Your Scrap Metal

Melissa Stanley

While demolishing your home and then rebuilding it from scratch may be more cost-effective than completely renovating the property, you'll still be spending a lot of cash on demolition and rebuilding. While you may not see much value in the shell of the property before it is demolished, you may be able to make some money out of it by having any scrap metal in the property recycled.

If your demolition company doesn't do this or doesn't pass the money from scrap recycling back to you, then it may be worth talking to a scrap metal recycling company to see what they can do with the metals in your home and to put some money back in your pocket.

What's Your Scrap Metal Worth?

Contact a couple of local scrap metal dealers and ask them to visit your property to assess if it would be worth recycling the metals in it. You may be surprised at just how much recyclable metal there is on site that you can sell but you can't see.

For example, a scrap metal dealer may be happy to buy any piping, wires, boilers or metal sheets that are part of your home's plumbing or heating system. Your roof may also be a good source of metal. You may even be able to sell stuff such as radiators, metal sinks, old pots and pans and, in some cases, white goods you want to get rid of like washing machines, fridges, freezers and dishwashers. This can be particularly useful if you plan on buying new appliances later once you've rebuilt your home.

When Is Metal Removed?

Typically, if you're stripping metal out of a knockdown-rebuild property, you'll get most of the metal out before the actual demolition. If you're doing a lot of the pre-demolition work yourself, then you can collect scrap metal as you go along—some dealers may lend you a bin or skip to collect everything in that they then pick up when you're done. If you don't want to strip metals out yourself, it shouldn't be hard to find a scrap metal dealer that will come into the property before it is torn down to remove items for you.

Selling your scrap metal doesn't just help you make a little cash; it also gets stuff out of the property for you. Also, you'll know that your metals will be recycled rather than just dumped which is better for the environment. If you have a large amount of metal which you no longer need, you may be trying to figure out what you can do with it. While it may be tempting to dump old metal, if you do this you could be making a serious mistake. By recycling the metal you can enjoy two major benefits. The first benefit is that, because the metal will be reused, you will be helping to protect the environment. The second benefit is that you will receive some cash in return for the metal. Last year, I recycled some metal and I was surprised at how easy it was to do this. If you want to find out more, read on!
