Metal Recycling: Everything You Need to Know

Benefits Of Recycling Common Household Objects

Melissa Stanley

You might not realise how much metal is around your home until you really take stock. More obvious objects are appliances, bicycles and cars, but metal is possibly on door handles, around shower screens, and within cutlery, toys, phones and TVs. So why should you care? Here are several benefits you'll receive from recycling your everyday household objects.

Saves Energy And Water

Manufacturing items using recycled steel cans rather than producing new steel saves both energy and water—up to 75% of energy and 40% of water. Additionally, using recycled steel lessens pollution by up to 90%. Consuming less energy typically results in lower greenhouse gas emissions that trap heat within the atmosphere and warm the earth. By offering your metal objects for recycling, you're supporting the recycling process and are thus doing your bit for the environment.

Preserves Natural Materials

While wood and stone are organic products that come directly from nature, metals result from processing raw minerals and other elements from the earth. These elements are finite; they don't replenish. Each time you recycle an object, you're adding to the available pot of recycled steel, which saves precious resources. So your recycling efforts will have a domino effect on the overall picture.

Uses Less Landfill Space

Every item that ends up in a metal recycling plant is one less that ends up in a landfill. Big things in particular, like washing machines, fridges and cars, accumulatively take up large amounts of space as more and more landfills overflow. It's far better than such items transform into other useful metal items: more modern cars and newly updated appliances and so on.

Is De-Cluttering

Going through your home in search of metal items to recycle helps to de-clutter your home. Whether it's old toasters, fridges, copper wiring, bicycles or tools, you can feel more organised once you've collected all the unused objects lying around and sent them off to a recycling plant. Once you start looking, you might have more suitable objects than you would think.

Generates Extra Revenue

Metal recycling will bring in extra revenue which you can spend on entertainment, clothes or home improvements. Renovating, in particular, can generate a whole new load of metal items which you could recycle such as old awnings, plumbing, gutters, garage doors and metal window frames. The money you earn from all these outdated items can offset some or a lot of the renovation costs.

Metal Recycling: Everything You Need to Know

If you have a large amount of metal which you no longer need, you may be trying to figure out what you can do with it. While it may be tempting to dump old metal, if you do this you could be making a serious mistake. By recycling the metal you can enjoy two major benefits. The first benefit is that, because the metal will be reused, you will be helping to protect the environment. The second benefit is that you will receive some cash in return for the metal. Last year, I recycled some metal and I was surprised at how easy it was to do this. If you want to find out more, read on!
